SADTU welcomes ANC victory and thanks teachers for the part they played
16 April 2009
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) welcomes the overwhelming majority achieved by the African National Congress in the 2009 elections. The fact that elections were free and fair is a tribute to the South African people and the growing maturity of our young democracy.
The leadership of SADTU takes this opportunity to thank staff, organizers, elected officials and the thousands of SADTU members who worked tirelessly to campaign for this historic victory.
Also our appreciation goes out to the thousands of teachers who were appointed by the IEC to assist with elections. Particularly in the rural areas teachers have since 1994 performed this valuable task in a professional manner ensuring the smooth-running of the democratic process.
Together we have prevented the neo-liberal agenda to divide and weaken the ANC. Together we have strengthened the pro-poor and pro-working class bias of the ANC. Working together we can do so much more.
