Disruption of schools in Soweto
22 October 2009
The South African Democratic Teachers Union wants to state categorically that it has no intention to disrupt schooling and examinations in Soweto.
This follows media reports this morning stating that schools in Soweto were to be disrupted when union members meet to discuss the docking of their salaries by the Gauteng Department of Education.
SADTU is calling upon its members to ensure they do not heed the call to disrupt schooling and examinations.
Teachers have a right to meet as union members but can do so after working hours. SADTU also calls upon the Gauteng Department of Education to desist from disrupting education by engaging now in premature administrative processes by deducting from the salaries of teachers as part of no work no pay agreement following the 2007 strike.
The initial agreement was that deductions would take place over six months. However, the process has dragged on for longer than it was bargained for and some members have had incorrect deductions on their salaries. As SADTU we regard this as an administrative failure by the department.
The National Leadership of SADTU has directed the regional leadership to hold a meeting at 14H00 today to report back to members on issues affecting them.
