SADTU supports the listing of teachers convicted of sexual offences
12 August 2009
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) welcomes the online publishing of teachers convicted of sexually abusing learners by the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
SADTU takes the view that every effort needs to be made to protect our learners from the predatory activity of a minority of teachers whose actions tarnish the profession.
SACE has the statutory powers to suspend and strike teachers off the roll depending on the severity of their misdemeanors.
As SADTU, we urge all prospective teacher employers to check details of their prospective employee teachers. This will go a long way in ensuring that convicted teacher offenders are never employed in South Africa again.
