SADTU Statement on the Adjournment of the COSATU 15th National Congress
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (fully supports the decision of the Congress
of South African Trade Unions ( to adjourn its 15th National Congress in order to protect
the unity, integrity and historic mission of the Federation.
As a revolutionary affiliate of COSATU, SADTU recognises that the interests of the working class are always superior to individual ambitions, personal preferences and organisational expediency. The decision to adjourn Congress, though painful and difficult, reflects the highest traditions of working-class democracy, collective leadership and organisational maturity. It affirms our understanding that the strength of the labour movement lies not in the triumph of individuals, but in the unity and organised power of workers acting collectively to advance their common interests.
SADTU commends all delegates and affiliates who demonstrated political discipline, revolutionary responsibility and commitment to worker unity by placing the interests of the Federation and the working class above personal considerations. In moments of difficulty, true leadership is measured not by the pursuit of narrow victories but by the willingness to safeguard the strategic unity of the workers’ movement. The actions of delegates and affiliates have reaffirmed that COSATU belongs not to leaders or office bearers, but to the millions of workers who look to the Federation a s their shield against exploitation, poverty, inequality and unemployment.
We are particularly encouraged by the spirit of comradeship and collective introspection that has prevailed during this period. The adjournment provides an opportunity for honest engagement, principled reflection and the strengthening of organisational cohesion. It reminds us that contradictions within a movement of workers must be resolved through democratic engagement, guided at all times by the strategic objective of advancing the interests of the working class.
SADTU also wishes to express its profound appreciation to former leaders of COSATU, including those serving within the broader democratic movement and the Alliance, whose wisdom, experience and revolutionary guidance have contributed immensely during this challenging period. Their intervention and counsel have once again demonstrated the enduring value of collective memory, principled leadership and loyalty to the historic mission of the Federation. We salute them for placing the unity of COSATU above all other considerations and for helping to guide the movement through a difficult moment.
The Federation of Elijah Barayi was forged through sacrifice, struggle and an unwavering
commitment to the cause of workers and the poor. It remains the most powerful organised
expression of working class aspirations in our country. SADTU therefore reiterates its firm
conviction that there can be no substitute for a united, militant and worker controlled COSATU capable of leading struggles against austerity, retrenchments, exploitation, the rising cost of living, and the persistent challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
As SADTU, we recommit ourselves unequivocally to the unity, cohesion and strengthening of COSATU. We pledge to continue mobilising educators and education workers behind the
programmes of the Federation and to work with all affiliates to deepen solidarity, defend
collective bargaining, advance quality public services and build a society founded on equality, social justice and human dignity. Above all, we recommit ourselves to the service of humanity. Our struggle is not merely for improved conditions of employment, but for the emancipation of all those who suffer under poverty, marginalisation and exploitation. We remain guided by the conviction that the freedom and advancement of workers are inseparable from the broader struggle for a more just, democratic and humane society.
SADTU calls on its members and all workers to use this period to strengthen unity, deepen worker consciousness and prepare for the successful reconvening of the 15th National Congress. We are confident that COSATU will emerge from this moment stronger, more united and better positioned to fulfil its historic mandate.
COSATU is bigger than any individual. Its unity is the unity of workers. Its strength is the strength of workers. Its future is the future of workers.
SADTU would like to assure her members that serving them remains the Union ’s priority in line with the Union ’s 203 0 Vision. It is committed to ensuring the safety of workers schools remaining safe havens and fighting against the victimization of teachers and education workers
The Union with the backing of its federation COSATU, continue to fight tirelessly for access to housing and affordable medical aid for workers.
