SADTU Free State condemns the attack of Student Teacher
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union in the Free State condemned with strongest terms the attack of the University of Free State Student Teacher who is on practice teaching at Lekhulong Secondary School in Bloemfontein. The incident occurred in the vicinity of learners and is a perpetuation of gender-based violence that has engulfed the country.
This senseless act of violence on a young woman is not only an attack on an individual, but on teaching profession, education system and the democratic values upon which our democratic society is founded. This act is further a demonstration of a deep-rooted stereo type of supremacy over women.
As the culprit is to appear before the magistrate on 12 June 2026, SADTU welcomes the swift response by the law enforcement agencies and commend the authorities for ensuring that the perpetrator is brought to book. We trust that the criminal justice will handle this matter with the seriousness it deserves and that justice should prevail.
Student Teachers are an integral part of the education fraternity as they enter our schools to acquire practical experience, contribute to teaching and learning, and prepare themselves to become the educators of tomorrow. Our Student Teachers deserve respect and support in carrying out these responsibilities in environments that are safe, secure and free from violence, intimidation, harassment and abuse.
SADTU remains deeply concern by the prevalence of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in our society that has to protect our schools, leaners, teachers and other education workers. Incidents such as these serve as painful reminder that much work is to be done to eradicate violence against women and girl children. No woman should have fear for her safety while pursuing her studies, performing her duties, or contributing to the society.
As SADTU we stand in solidarity with the Student Teacher, her family, fellow students and the broader Community during this difficult period. Our SADTU Student Chapter Branch will further interact with the Student Teacher in providing more support.
We reaffirm our commitment to defending the rights, dignity and wellbeing of education workers, and will continue to advocate for safer schools and workplaces in the province.
