SADTU condemns escalating violence against women and calls for urgent action.
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) is in deeply exasperated and sorrowful over the escalating and unacceptable killings of women across our nation. We are deeply mindful of the fear gripping the nation as the number of women found dead continues to rise.
As a union in a sector that is predominantly women, we are deeply affected by this scourge that threatens the safety and dignity of our sisters, daughters, educators, and the communities we serve.
Violence against women is not only a gross violation of human rights but also a tragedy that devastates families and undermines the very foundation of our society. We condemn, in the strongest terms, all acts of brutality and call upon all sectors of society; government, law enforcement, communities and individuals to urgency address this endemic crisis.
We urge government to strengthen and enforce laws protecting women, ensuring perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
As educators, we believe that sustainable change begins with education, awareness, and empowerment. SADTU commits to ensuring that a comprehensive education curriculum that challenge harmful gender stereotypes, promote healthy relationships, and teach conflict resolution from an early age is central in our schools.
We reaffirm our commitment to being the agents of change, nurturing a generation that respects the dignity and rights of all.
We call on our members, communities, and all South Africans to stand firm against this crisis. Through collective action, education, and unwavering resolve, we can create a safer future where every woman lives free from fear and violence.
