The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) distances its General Secretary from a viral video of a branch bi-election which carries his image, creating a false impression that he is endorsing a particular candidate.
The General Secretary is a national leader in the Union who embraces and represents every member of the organisation. He cannot be featured in any material that seeks to creates division in the Union.
Elections are naturally contentious and have the potential to either strengthen or weaken any organisation. As the chief custodian of unity in SADTU, the General Secretary’s role is to lead and unite the Union, not to be used by any member or structure for electioneering purposes.
The person who created and circulated the video has violated the Union’s policy and brought the name of the organisation into disrepute. The individual will be subjected to the Union policy by the branch where he is a member.
