SADTU STATEMENT ON THE DEMISE OF RENOWNED MATHEMATICS TEACHER, WILLIAM SMITH
22 August 2024
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of renowned teacher, William Smith. Smith was more than just a teacher, he was a trailblazer who turned television into a vast classroom, reaching millions of learners across South Africa.
Through his popular show, The Learning Channel on SABC, he simplified complex subjects like Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology, and English, making them accessible to all. Starting in the 1990s, Smith’s vision was to give disadvantaged pupils free access to extra classes, ensuring that education knew no boundaries. His passion for teaching, particularly his mission to dispel the myth that Mathematics is only for those with high IQs, will continue to inspire generations.
In 2019, he was awarded The Order of the Baobab by President Cyril Ramaphosa, recognizing his groundbreaking contribution to education. His legacy as a revolutionary figure, especially during apartheid, will be remembered for breaking racial barriers and bringing knowledge to all South Africans.
We extend condolences to his family and friends. His impact will never be forgotten.
