SADTU STATEMENT ON THE ACCIDENT THAT TOOK THE LIVES OF TWELVE LEARNERS
10 July 2024
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) is deeply saddened by the news of a tragic accident that left twelve learners and one driver dead on the N12 near Elands Road in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong this morning, on day-two of schools opening for the third term after winter holidays
The learners were travelling in a minibus to school when it was allegedly hit by a bakkie. Seven other learners who survived were rushed to hospital.
We wish to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved families, fellow learners and teachers at schools where the deceased attended. Eleven of the dead learners were from Rocklands Primary School while seven from the same school survived and one from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig passed away.
The accident has left the learners and teachers, parents and the Kokosi-Wedela community deeply traumatised. We therefore call on the police to investigate the circumstances that led to this tragic incident so that the families can find closure. We urge the department of social development to rise to the occasion and assist the department of basic education with psychosocial support services to the affected schools and families.
We do not want to apportion blame or speculate about the cause of this tragic accident, but we call on the Departments of Basic Education and Transport to work together to formulate a proper scholar transport plan not only for Gauteng but the country.
