SADTU NW STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF MEC FOR EDUCATION
24 June 2024
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) in the North West province welcomes and congratulate the appointment of MEC for Education, Honourable Viola Motsumi.
MEC Motsumi is not new in the sector, having served as an educator and MEC during the sixth administration. We are therefore convinced that she understands what the sector is all about. The MEC takes responsibility of a very diverse and hectic department, and we request her to prioritize the following areas:
- Establishment of a Teacher -Development Institute
- Filling of all vacancies for teaching, non-teaching, and office-based staff
- Improving security in our schools
- Providing necessary tools of trade for educators and office-based staff.
- Improve the conditions of all workers and securing employment of Grade R educators.
We hope and wish that the MEC will respect and help to enforce policy implementation to ensure stability, labour peace and unity. The stability of the department is sacrosanct.
SADTU, as a union, will at all material times engage robustly in the interest of her members and that must be understood as such and never be personalized.
We wish that the MEC should embrace unions and other stakeholders and work with them to further stabilize the department.
We have no doubt that the MEC will excel in her role and make a significant contribution to the department. The union commits to support Honourable Motsumi
