SADTU KZN STATEMENT ON BRUTAL KILLING OF CDE BUSANI KHOMO OF SIKHETHUXOLO HIGH SCHOOL
SADTU KwaZulu-Natal learned on 5 December 2024 about the brutal killing of her member and a former leader, Cde Busani Khomo, the Deputy Principal and acting Principal of Sikhethuxolo Secondary school in Hammarsdale, Pinetown District.
It is alleged that gunmen ambushed him on his way home from work, fatally shot at and subsequently killed him in cold blood. The Union and members are still in shock as a result of the continuing killing of teachers by the gun-crazy criminals and murderers who are killing our people each and every week.
Cde Khomo was a very dedicated teacher who always associated with success. He taught at Ingede Primary school and moved on to Luthayi High. In 2013 he was appointed as the Departmental Head at Amatshezulu High school where he served the Union as a Site Steward. In the same year, he was elected as the Branch Treasurer of Mathews Meyiwa in Mzi Mthembu Region. In 2014, he was promoted to becoming a Deputy Principal at Sikhethuxolo High School where he served until his untimely and saddening passing on. Between years 2015 to 2017, he served as a Branch Secretary of Mathews Meyiwa.
Besides his commitment to serve the Union, Cde Khomo was a true Congress activist as he served in structures of the Mass Democratic movement with vigor and determination. During his passing on, he doubled up as a Branch Secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and an elections co-ordinator of the ANC in Mathews Meyiwa zone. SADTU KwaZulu-Natal is shocked and devastated by this saddening news and further calls upon anyone who might have information that can lead to apprehension of the perpetrators to report this at the nearest Police station.
Equally, SADTU’s appeal at this time for the law enforcement urgencies to be given space to conduct investigations as gossips and speculations may not assist anyone.
As the family prepares for his burial over the weekend, SADTU sends deepest condolences to the Khomo family that has lost a father, a husband, a son and a sibling to ruthless criminals. We further send our heartfelt condolences to the staff and entire community of Sikhethuxolo High School who have lost a colleague and a principal; and further to the Mass Democratic Movement that has lost an inspirational leader and an activist.
We will always cherish the last moments we spent with Comrade Busani at Elangeni TVET College wherein the Union was engaging the management on matters affecting workers. His last words when we closed, close to midnight on the 3rd of December just a day before he was killed- “Bekusamnandi ukuba la” as he led struggle songs during the meeting – he wanted us to continue engaging throughout, unfortunately we had to adjourn.
May his revolutionary soul rest in peace.
