The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union in the Eastern Cape Province wishes the 2023 NSC candidates best wishes as they start with their end of the year examinations.
We know this is a culmination of twelve (12) years of schooling in the basic education sector. The journey has not been smooth as schooling was disrupted in the years during the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic which necessitated a country lockdown to mitigate and contain the spread of the pandemic.
We all know that schools in the province were not spurred during the service delivery protests in our communities. The first targets of community protests were schools with teachers and learners being unable to access them. There are other social ills like gangsterism in some areas, drug peddling and teenage pregnancy that continue to pose a challenge to our education system. We congratulate teachers in general and our members for putting shoulder to the wheel to cover the lost ground due to these unfortunate developments. Rest assured that your union has faith in you.
We are very confident that our members working under appalling and sometimes unbearable conditions have managed to perform their critical tasks i.e., teaching, assessing, and resulting learners.
To the learners we say, put more effort in the final push as you prepare for the examinations. Listen to the advice of your teachers as they guide you on the best exam preparation methods. Avoid taking shortcuts and bringing prohibited materials to the exam venues.
We call upon the Provincial Department of Education to ensure that the examinations run smoothly without any hindrances. The Department must ensure that there is adequate security and that learners are able to access examination centres without any hindrances.
We call on the parents and guardians to give unwavering support during this period.
All the best to the Class of 2023.
