The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) in Gauteng is saddened by the passing away of Comrade Ignatius Jacobs. Popularly know as Comrade Nash, Jacobs sacrificed immensely towards the struggle for the liberation of the African people in our country under the banner of the African National Congress.
Amongst the several responsibilities he was assigned to, Cde Nash was MEC of Education in Gauteng after a few years of ushering the democratic dispensation. It was during this period that the education system was undergoing a complete overhaul. During his tenure (2001-2005) he led the process of stakeholder engagement through EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING conferences that brought together key role players to generate proposals which fed into the policy and legislation making processes. He translated the slogan of ‘People’s Education for People’s Power’ into practical action.
He believed that decisive measures must be taken in order to improve the quality of learning and teaching, more especially in township schools. To this end, he introduced the Education Action Zones that assisted many township schools to improve their performance despite the stubborn apartheid legacy. This intervention laid a basis for the current improved performance of township schools.
He led the process of the establishment of Matthew Goniwe School of Leadership and Governance. The latter is a government agency whose core business is to conduct research, develop and deliver cutting edge capacity building programs in teacher development, school management and leadership and school governance. The institution remains relevant given the ongoing education transformation.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the African National Congress.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
