SADTU Statement on the 44th Anniversary of the Congress of South Africa Students (COSAS)

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) wishes to congratulate the South African Congress of Students (COSAS) on her 44 th anniversary. Born on the 31 st of May 1979 at the height of repression by the apartheid regime, COSAS came into being to represent the interests of students in the wake of the June 16 Soweto uprisings which saw many young people dying and being imprisoned for fighting against Bantu education.

SADTU holds its first ordinary national executive committee meeting in 2023

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) had its first ordinary meeting for the year 2023 in Boksburg on the 28 th and 29 th of March. The meeting convened after several special executive committee meetings since February to deal with wage negotiations for the 2023/2024 financial cycle.

Joint Statement by Majority Unions in the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), an affiliate of COSATU, together with the unions affiliated to the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) namely NAPTOSA, PSA, HOSPERSA and SAOU, driven by the mandate from members, have since the 17 th of February 2023 engaged in wage negotiations for 2023/24 at the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council. Together, these unions form a 53,9% majority in the Council.

SADTU strongly condemns the reckless advertising by a Pretoria-based nightclub enticing students to use their NSFAS allowances to buy alcohol

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), as a union with a vested interest in creating a learning nation, cannot allow the reckless advertising by a Pretoria-based Uropa nightclub to go unchallenged.  The club published posters offering discounts for alcohol for its Student Night Wednesday adding the punchline – NSFAS INGENILE – literally meaning NFSAS has landed.
