SADTU NEC MOURNS THE DEATH OF THE MARIKANA MINERS
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) has joined millions of South Africans in expressing condolences to the families of the miners killed at the Lonmin Platinum mine in Marikana.
At a two-day meeting of SADTU’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held in Johannesburg from 24 – 25 August, also welcomed the announcement by President Jacob Zuma outlining the terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana tragedy. We welcome the constitution of the commission and the strict deadline set to conclude its task.

SADTU in the North West is frustrated by the incompetency and non-commitment of North West Education Department officials
It has been three weeks since the second semester of schooling and the third quarter of the academic year but the spirit and recharged energies with which we started the 2012 academic year have been dampened by the negativity, disrespect, non-cooperation and arrogant attitude displayed towards the SADTU leadership and membership by the North West Department of Education and Training through its ineptitude and non-committed officials.
SADTU in the Western Cape says the provincial Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) won’t address apartheid inequalities
The Provincial Government is not making any effort to reduce the inequalities in the Western Cape and SADTU cannot be silent on this matter. At the pre MTEF consultations SADTU tabled a proposal in line with its resolution of an ideal school, that each institution should have at least a school librarian, learning support officer, a sports educator, and a guidance counsellor/teacher. This should be in conjunction with the required infrastructure.
SADTU condemns the dismissal of teachers in Swaziland
The South African Democratic Teachers` Union (SADTU) strongly condemns the dismissal of Swaziland teachers for embarking on a legal strike over salary increases.
Hundred and ten teachers were dismissed last week bringing the number of fired teachers to 250 since the beginning of the five-week long strike. Members of the executive of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) are among the fired teachers.

Media statement around Public Services negotiations update
Public Service wage negotiations reached a stalemate yesterday after the employer reneged on their latest offer of 6.9%. The employer had presented the 6.9 % cost of living adjustment in a meeting with labour on the 4th of July 2012. It was then expected that labour would thereafter consult with their members in order to get a mandate on this latest offer and would revert back to the council after consultations.

SADTU’s response to the DA leader Theuns Botha on the decision to close 27 schools in the Western Cape.
On 9 November 2010, SADTU placed on the agenda of the Provincial Education Labour Relations Council, a request to be consulted on the Education Plan for the Western Cape. The response from the Western Cape Education Department was that they were not ready to consult the unions at that stage. To date, the WCED has not presented its plan in the chamber for consultation with teacher unions in the Western Cape. SADTU is not aware of the plan Mr Botha is referring to. It does not surprise the union that a secret plan exist in the office of the leader. It shows the DA government’s disregard for social dialogue in the Province.
UPDATE REPORT ON 2012 PUBLIC SERVICE WAGE NEGOTIATIONS AS ON THE 25 JUNE 2012
The Public Service Wage negotiations resumed on the 25 June 2012 at the PSCBC with Labour heeding for the Minister’s call to go back to the negotiating table. Subsequent to the call, Labour requested for the convening of the Council in order to continue with the negotiations.

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE TO THE NXESI FAMILY
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) wishes to extend its deepest and sincerest condolences to our former General Secretary cde Thulas, cde Sesi and the entire Nxesi family for the tragic loss of their daughter Lona. 17-year-old Lona died in a car accident near Kroonstad on Monday. She was on her way home from boarding school in Bloemfontein.
The ANC in KZN must be wary of adopting the DA agenda and undermine its relationship with COSATU - its historic ally
The ANC is supposed to be the disciplined force of the left. However, in KZN there are signs of an ANC deepening its relationship with the liberal counter-revolutionary force - the DA at the expense of COSATU.
Not so long ago the public witnessed hugs and kisses between the DA and the office of the premier (the ANC chairperson) where the two structures were demonstrating their solid opposition to COSATU and expressing their readiness to implement the controversial youth subsidy.
