SADTU wishes NEHAWU a successful Congress

3 November 2021

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union wishes her sister union and fellow affiliate of COSATU, the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) a successful 12th National Congress. The Congress takes place from today, 03 November until 05 November at Birchwood Hotel under the theme;Strengthen workplace organisation to defend collective bargaining, deepen class consciousness and advance internationalism.”

This congress is being convened in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic which has seen workers losing their lives while others try to adapt to the new world of work which has been brought about by the pandemic. Homes are now becoming workplaces and technology is increasingly becoming the employer’s ally.  The pandemic has negatively impacted the quality of our public service, health and safety of members and the public in general.

We hope the congress will surely provide the platform for NEHAWU to reflect on these and adopt resolutions that will respond to the challenges for the benefit of not only the members but for all the workers.

Since NEHAWU’s 11th Congress in 2017 we have seen an onslaught on of our hard-fought for gains which is right to collective bargaining with government showing utter disrespect to signed collective agreements such as Collective Agreement 1 of 2018 by not honouring the last leg of the agreement which led to workers in the public sector not receiving their increments in 2020. This and many other challenges will hopefully find expression in the deliberations in the Congress.

SADTU wishes that NEHAWU as our dependable ally emerges from this congress more united and committed to its founding principles of fighting for workers’ rights and uniting them. A united NEHAWU is a united COSATU.
