14 December 2020

The South African Democratic Teachers Union in the North West (SADTU NW) has learned with great shock, the horrific and fatal taxi accident on Friday 11 th December 2020 that took the lives of three Grade 12 learners from Rethusegile Secondary School in Lethabong Village near Rustenburg. The three met the accident on the way from attending attending an “After examination celebration”.

We commend the Department of Education led by Honourable MEC Matsemela for responding promptly to this unfortunate situation by providing necessary support to the affected families and the entire school community. We wish all other learners speedy recovery as they continue to receive medical attention.

This is a huge loss to the nation taking note of the academic journey the learners had undertaken and just after finishing the last lap of their formal primary and secondary schooling.

We trust that the law enforcement agencies will investigate and establish the cause of this incident and take appropriate action.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families and entire school community of RethusegileSecondary school.
