The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) has learnt, with shock and sadness, about the passing of its former National Treasurer, Comrade Disebo Mabote. SADTU conveys its deepest and heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and colleagues in the education fraternity.
Cde Mabote was elected to serve as the National Treasurer in the 1995 National Congress. She became the second National Treasurer of the Union since its inception on 6 October 1990. Taking the reins at such an early stage of the union, Cde Mabote had a huge task of ensuring that the finances of the union were stable in the face of transition as the education departments that had been divided along racial and ethical lines were being amalgamated into one non-racial education system. Some former Bantustan technocrats were refusing to recognise SADTU and would not to approve or process member subscriptions.
A teacher by profession, Cde Mabote served in various leadership roles in the Department of Education in the Free State Province. She became Chief Education Specialist for Whole School Evaluation in the Fezile Dabi District before becoming the District Director of the District. In 2012, Cde Mabote became Chief Education Specialist for Sports, Youth and Recreation in the Provincial Office of Education and later became Director of the ABET Section.
Cde Mabote took early retirement due to ill health and her condition deteriorated until she passed away on Thursday, 17 June 2021.
May her soul rest in peace.
