The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) would like to express its deepest shock and dismay at the callous killing of the newly re-elected chairperson of the Mbuso Shabalala Region and principal of Nyonemhlophe High School in Mid-Illovo in the KwaZulu Natal South Coast Nathi Cyril  Zondi.

Zondi was gunned downed outside his house in Umlazi’s Y Section this morning. He was approached by two men who greeted and then opened fire on him. SADTU strongly condemns this cold-blooded murder which has left not only the family but the community as well as the learners and teachers in his school highly traumatized. However, we commend the police for their prompt response when alerted about this ghastly act.

We also urge the community to assist the police with all the information they may have which may lead to the arrest of culprits.

Zondi’s killing has dealt the family a double fatal blow. Two years ago, his wife Matutu – also a teacher - suffered the same fate when she was shot dead in broad daylight while walking to school. We commend police for bringing her killer to book. We hope they will do the same with Zondi’s killers.

Zondi was a strong, reliable and passionate SADTU cadre and an inspiring leader. The results of Nyonemhlophe improved during his three to four year tenure as principal. A man with a passion for his school and education, Zondi took the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign to heart not only in his school but in the entire region. He also led from the forefront during the Union’s recent Work To Rule action. SADTU General Secretary Mugwena Maluleke has strongly condemned the killing and described it as a blatant disrespect for human life. Maluleke said Zondi’s death has created a huge gap for his family, his school, community and the nation. “Comrade Zondi’s death was untimely. It came at a time when are faced with the task of transforming education in the country. When you kill a teacher, you are killing a nation,” Mugwena said.

SADTU would like to urge members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) to leave no stone unturned in solving this murder.
