I was first involved in teacher organizations when I joined the staff at Edgewood College of Education in Pinetown in 1983, and was told that as part of my obligatory affiliation to the Teachers Federal Council for Whites (for which I still have the certificate!), I also had to join the then Natal Teachers’ Society (NTS) and the Onderwyse Unie (NOU). They were “white” organizations, and my knowledge and experience of them had shown me that I could simply not be a member.
