(SADTU) FREE STATE PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE PRESS STATEMENT RELEASE: 15/10/2011

INTRODUCTION

The Provincial Executive Committee gathered on the 15th October to map a way forward to advance the gains, aspirations and needs of members in general and society at large in the context of national democratic revolution en route to socialism. We have robustly engaged ourselves on the functioning of both the Union structures and the state of the alliance in the province in moving forward to centenary celebrations of the existence of the African National Congress in 2012 and beyond. The meeting has therefore decided on the following matters.

SADTU welcomes the new MEC for Education in the Eastern Cape

SADTU in the Eastern Cape congratulates the new MEC for Education, Honourable Mandla Makupula. As a stakeholder in education, we are happy to have him deployed in the department. We pledge our support to work with the MEC in all progressive endeavours aimed at rooting out corruption and bringing service to the working class and poor in the Eastern Cape.

As we told his predecessor, MEC Makupula is joining a department faced with many challenges so he must brace himself for the rough road ahead.

We wish him luck in his task of leading the department.

SADTU shocked at the tragic death of four learners at a school for the blind - 29 November 2010

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has expressed shock at the news of four learners from the Christiana School for The Blind in the North West who died tragically when their room in the school’s hostel caught fire in the early hours of this morning.

Three of the boys were blind and one was partially sighted. They were aged between 8 and 12.

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) joins the entire population in saying “Don’t Look Away - Act against Gender Violence.” We condemn any person who in the face of brutal acts against our children, continue to turn a blind eye.

SADTU unhappy with the recovery programme - 15 September 2010

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has raised concern and expressed disappointment at the announcement of the recovery programme by the Department of Education.  The programme, announced by the Council of Education Ministers, is targeting only Grade 12s and no mention is made of other grades.

As SADTU, we believe that such a narrow approach to the recovery process will further perpetuate the high failure rate in Grade 12 in years to come as it will rob those in lower grades of proper grounding to prepare them for Grade 12.
