ON THE DEATH OF COMRADE ZONKE CELE, CHIEF EDUCATION SPECIALIST AND SADTU LEADER
02 February 2010
MEDIA STATEMENT
SADTU in KwaZulu-Natal is saddened by the untimely departure of one of her greatest revolutionaries and a Site Steward in the Department of Education, comrade Zonke Cele. We are appalled at the brutality directed to an elderly defenceless female murdered in the presence of her granddaughter.
Comrade Zonke had selflessly dedicated her life to improving the lives of our learners and educators across the Province in her critical role as the Chief Education Specialist responsible for Educator Human Resource Development and implementation thereof. As a seasoned academic and educationist, she navigated with educators and school managers through various stages of curriculum overhauls for more than a decade now.
As a SADTU activist comrade Zonke was in the forefront of our call and struggles to eradicate corruption in the department that has crippled the department in terms of delivery of quality service to the public. It remains a blow that she met her brutal murderers at the height of our struggle against such corrupt activities. SADTU joins the rest of the people of KwaZulu-Natal and call for the SAPS to thoroughly investigate her murder and ascertain that whoever is behind this cruel and barbaric act is brought to book immediately.
SADTU will find strength and courage to overcome grief and sorrow of losing an activist by celebrating a life well lived. There could be no better way of living up to her dreams other than strengthening our resolve to fight corruption and all its manifestations as she abhorred it immensely.
We wish to convey our condolences as an organisation to the family, friends and colleagues of comrade Zonke Cele.
