12 July 2018
The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) fully supports the march by our sister union, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) to take place in Pretoria tomorrow.
POPCRU members in the Correctional, Police and Traffic sectors have for years been raising critical issues with the respective Departments to no positive responses. Some of these include among others; the finalisation of shift patterns, payment of outstanding Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD) in Correctional Services, end to police killings and implementation of all signed agreements.
As education workers, we believe that an attack on police and other law enforcers is a direct attack on the state. No country must at any point be driven to such points of vulnerability.
Any strategy to combat crime and have a secure country for economic development, peace and stability relies on happy and motivated police officers and support staff.
We call on the concerned Ministers to urgently attend to the issues raised by POPCRU to avoid further demoralizing of Workers at these sensitive and important sectors.
We urge our members as well as the general public to join the march and pledge solidarity with POPCRU.
An injury to one is an injury to all!
