SADTU statement on the brutal killing of the Deputy Principal of Efata School for the Blind and Deaf

1 August 2015

The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union has learnt with shock the brutal killing of the Deputy Principal of Efata School for the Blind and Deaf in the Eastern Cape Province, Mthatha  -  Ms Nodumo Mdleleni-Mzimane.  She was found in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds on her body on Tuesday, 28 July 2015.

Ms Mdleleni-Nzimane was teaching Economic and Management Sciences. She also had a scarce skill – Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) for deaf children and was in charge of a programme that gives hearing aids to deaf learners. She had an Honours Degree in Inclusive Education.

We are calling upon the law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned and bring these callous murderers to book.

We are going to mobilise our members across the region to stage demonstrations outside the Magistrate’s Court on each day of their appearance.

Finally, we would like to send our sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. May her soul rest in peace.
