SADTU Limpopo will on Monday, 03 October, 2018 picket at the Witpoort Magistrate Court where the alleged criminals who attacked and raped a female teacher a week ago, will be appearing.
We call upon all members of the union and other progressive formations to support the picket. The Province is shocked and disturbed by the barbaric attack and rape of the female teacher who is based at Mphari Secondary School in Lephalale. This attack has taken place at a time when the country is observing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign; it shows that we still have a long way to go as society to stem the tide of gender-based violence.
More worrying is the fact that the crime is said to have been perpetrated by former learners who were once taught by the affected educator. This reveals that as a society we have degenerated to a lower sense of moral conscience to an extent that education has failed to mould these learners to become responsible and active citizens of the country who would protect the rights and interests of women and children.
Acts of violence against both learners and teachers have been happening with such monotonous regularity in the country to an extent that we have begun to normalise them as a society. In the not so distant past educators used to be regarded highly by society; these attacks reveal serious fissures in the moral fabric of our society. We wish to commend the South African Police Service for the swift and prompt action in arresting the perpetrators. It is our fervent hope and wish that the mighty arm of the law will deal harshly with these criminals.
