Inaugural Memorial Lecture for late SADTU stalwart Poobie Naicker

28 April 2016

SADTU KwaZulu-Natal will be holding the inaugural Poobie Naicker lecture. We kindly invite the Media personnel to attend and cover the memorial lecture which is organised as follows:

Date: 29 April 2016-04-28
Time: 11H00
Venue: SADTU House; 321 Anton Lembethe Street, Durban.

Comrade Naicker became the First Deputy President of SADTU when the Union was officially launched on the 6th of October 1990 in Shareworld, Johannesburg. Prior to SADTU`s establishment, Naicker was President of Teachers Association of South Africa (TASA), which was the biggest Indian Teachers` Union even though its constitution stipulated that it was open to everybody. However, it could not practice that due to the apartheid system in the country at that time. It was due to Naicker`s visionary leadership that TASA brought to SADTU its membership, assets, shares secretariat support and a 15-storey building in Durban, laying the foundation for the fledgling union.

The memorial lecture will be addressed by, amongst others:

  • Cde Mabutho Cele SADTU Deputy President.
  • Cde Rej Brijraj Former SADTU leader and current CEO of SACE.
  • Cde Daya Govender Former SADTU leader and current DG of Public Works.
  • Cde Bheki Ntshalintshali COSATU General Secretary.
